I am the mother of a gifted son, and live in Nelson. For some time I have thought we could really use a support group for parents in our area - are there many Nelson/Tasman people out there who would agree? I have decided to be very brave and hold a meeting, and then see what evolves.
So I would like to invite all parents/caregivers of gifted children to a talk by Jean Edwards (teaches gifted children at a Nelson school) based around 'the highs and lows of parenting a gifted child'. This will be held on Tuesday 13 June, 7.30pm, at Birchwood School Hall supper room (behind administration building), Durham Street, Stoke. If there is enough support, I hope this will be the start of a supportive local network. Please feel free to contact me directly for more information, or to let me know if you are keen (moderate anxiety that no one will turn up!).
If you confirm that day I will email anyone who is a member on our database and lives in that area to let them know I know there has been other interest down that way.
Hi Janet
Did you form a group in Nelson? I'm the secretary of OAGAT in Dunedin, and I recently received an email from a woman who used to live in Dunedin, but now lives in Nelson, who is looking for a support group.
We recently hosted an afternoon of workshops for gifted children in Dunedin, as we were lucky to have Dr Tracy Riley and others from Massey University in town. There was some good PR in the paper and I've been inundated with inquiries since, though this was the only one from Nelson! Could you please let me know about this group, so I can pass the information on?
Best wishes
Carolyn
Hi anyone,
I have had ongoing concerns about my son, and he is due to start school soon. After reading about gifted children I feel like I am finally understand where is coming from, and finding his questions a bit more exciting rather than relentless. Anyway there doesn't seem to be much information about this in Nelson. I can't even find a local psychologist to assess him. Does anybody have any advice for me. Thanks heaps.
Cherie
Hi Cherie
Check the NZAGC website for their One Day Schools, I'm absolutely certain they have one running at Appleby School. You could even phone the school and ask! The ODS teacher might know of a local Ed Psych. Failing that maybe a trip to CHC (or wherever the nearest one is) would be worth it, just to put your mind at rest. Good luck and I suggest you keep an eye on this forum as it really is a huge help and certainly makes you realise you're aren't the first person to experience all kinds of unusual situations that NO ONE ever told you to expect!!!! ;-)
I'm new to this forum, it sounds like a great idea to get a support group started, I'm keen to do this - I have a 6 year old boy who we've had tested, and a 3 year old daughter (who knows)...it's all new to us as parents - we are challenged most by our emotionally sensitive 6-year-old.
We're in Richmond. Are you still looking to try forming a local group?
Hi, my husband and I are looking at moving to Nelson, I would be keen to join a group, our almost 5 yr old son is gifted, can anyone recommend any schools? I know about the 1 day school but I mean day to day schools? Have been looking at Clifton Terrace?
Thanks
It's a couple of months since your post, but I thought I would let you know that there is no one day school in Nelson now. It closed last year.
The Ministry of Inspiration runs lots of different things for kids in Nelson, but as they tend to avoid the word 'gifted' (it's a funding thing), you might not hear of them if you search online using that word. Their offerings are, however, for gifted kids.
