I got this book on a friend's recommendation from the Auckland Explorers Library, thinking my son would enjoy it.
I'm having a hard time getting past the sneering caricature of George's parents. They might as well be caricaturing me. Is it really valuable to typecast people with environmental awareness, individuality, and anticonsumerist values as if they were practically child abusers and therefore dismiss the problems that science and technology do create?
To add to the bias, the authors then falsely portray the scientist to the young reader taking an oath to do science only for good. If only!
An interesting science story could surely have been created without this pretend polarisation.
I think I'm not going to find out what happens at the end of this book. What a shame...
